Cuttputlli, Vikrant Rona, Sundari Gardens lead Indian OTT releases – Sept 2 weekend

Going by recent evidences, this is not the best of times for Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. His movies like Raksha Bandha and Samrat Prithviraj have tanked at the box-office. Of course, many other Bollywood biggies have also bitten the dust of late. So in a sense, an Akshay Kumar starrer choosing the safety of a direct-OTT-release is understandable. In any case, his last direct OTT release

His thriller Cuttputlli headlines this week’s OTT releases. The others in the list include the Kannada hit Vikrant Rona, the Malayalam flicks Sundari Gardens (which is a direct-on-streamer release), Priyan Ottathilanu, and the Season 2 of the contentiously popular The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.

This week’s releases also include Vidyut Jammmwal’s action entertainer Khuda Haafiz: Chapter 2 on Zee5, the Prabhu Deva starrer in Tamil My Dear Bhootham on Zee5, and the Telugu anthology on Aha, Panchatantra Kathalu.

Synopsis: The 2018 Tamil movie Ratsasan was a surprise hit. The suspense thriller followed the simple formula of a cop on a whodunit case without much fuss. It had the interesting angle of a wannabe film director giving up his dreams and becoming a police office. He has to chase down a serial killer who target school kids.

That the film, even while being a hit, did not make much of a splash outside of Tamil Nadu must have come in handy for it being remade in Hindi. It should be a cakewalk for Akshay Kumar as an investigative policeman. It is a role that he can play in his sleep. This is Akshay’s direct OTT release after last year’s Atrangi ReCuttputlli has all the ingredients to work on OTT.
